Three Decades of Winemaking, Aloha-Style

Volcano Winery has been growing grapes and making distinctive wines for over thirty years at the edge of Kilauea, the world’s most active volcano. Their family-owned, woman-run vineyard is just 10 minutes from Volcano Village Lodge – wind down with a wine tasting after spending the day exploring Volcanoes National Park or sunbathing at a rare black sand beach.

Tour their picturesque vineyard and tea garden, which features several award-winning varietals, and enjoy a wine flight in the tasting room or on their patio overlooking the vineyard rows. As the only vineyard/winery on the Big Island, visiting Volcano Winery is a must for wine connoisseurs, tea enthusiasts, and casual drinkers alike. You’re bound to love the complex flavors of their “liquid aloha,” sipped on the slopes of a massive volcano, a truly Hawaiian experience.

Special Soil and Spectacular Wine

All great wine begins with great soil – nowhere is that more true than at Volcano Winery. The volcanic zone around Kilauea has been enriched by its ongoing eruptions, creating some of the world’s most fertile soil. This volcanic layer is nutrient-rich and holds water well, used in different ways over many generations, mainly for farming and ranching.

Just as volcanic soil produces wheat and corn in South America and sugar cane throughout the Hawaiian islands, Volcano Winery’s founders saw the promise of the area’s unique location, planting their first grapes here in 1986. Taking advantage of a microclimate where they get 50 inches less rain annually than Volcano Village (too much rain impedes the growing process of grapes), their first harvest of Symphony grapes thrived. They followed in later years with Cayuga, Pinot, and Syrah varieties. Around 20 years ago, they added tea to the rotation, producing black and white tea leaves that have won recognition in a competition of US tea growers.

Today, they grow and produce seven different wines, ranging from the light-bodied and crisp Cayuga White to the medal-winning Volcano Red, made from an 85% red/white grape blend and 15% local berries. Their dessert wines, made from macadamia nuts and honey, with one infused with black tea, are a delectable after-dinner treat.
