When Visiting Hilo Zoo

Hilo Zoo is open from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon and admission is free of charge. Pana’ewa Zoo is located on Stainback Highway just off the Highway 11. If you are driving from Volcano, you will see the zoo sign on the left. Before going to the zoo, make sure to protect you skin by wearing a sunscreen, bug spray, and bring plenty of water to keep hydrated. The zoo’s climate is warm and humid, but don’t worry there’s plenty of spots to rest and sit in the shade. The Pana’ewa Zoo is a favorite among local keiki (kids) for the newly-renovated playground and petting zoo. If you’re going to bring your kids with you, you can rent a stroller. Also, on site is a gift shop where you can purchase souvenirs.

Animals in the Pana’ewa Zoo

Axis Deer

Axis deer are a native to Sri Lanka and India, wherein they peacefully live in grasslands and forest. They were introduced to the island of Hawaii in 1867 as a gift and thus multiplied along the years. Currently, there are only two axis deer in the zoo and their diet consists of two cups of corncob and four cups of pellet alfalfa.

Boa Constrictor

Pana’ewa Zoo’s newest addition is the Boa Constrictor. This snake was confiscated on Oahu from someone illegally smuggling the snake for pet trade. Hawaii is a very unique tropical place, for it does not have snakes! Which is why USDA and other organizations are very strict with importing/smuggling animals to the islands. At least the snake found a home at the zoo and is in a beautiful enclosure.
