Da "Big" Island

While the state of Hawaii is formed by an archipelago of islands, there are eight main islands – Ni’ihau, Kaua’i, O’ahu, Moloka’i, Kaho’olawe, Maui, and the biggest of the islands is Hawaii island which is where the state takes its name. To avoid confusion, Hawaii island is generally referred to as “the big island” and it is on this island that you will find everything that you need for your perfect tropical escape, adventure holiday, or just a chance to relax and unwind. Relaxation Everyone relaxes in different ways – whether you need to lie by a swimming pool, work on your tan on a beach, or just sit somewhere quiet with a drink in your hand, relaxing is something that generally features somewhere in everyone’s holiday plans. On the big island we like to relax by going for a gentle walk through the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – there’s a lot of different hiking and walking trails of all types of lengths and difficulty, an ideal one for a relaxing walk is called Nahuku (also known as the Thurston Lava Tube) or if you fancy something longer to stretch your legs then there’s a great day hike along Chain of Craters Road. 240 kilometres of hiking trails all waiting for you. Education Behind the beauty of this island there is a huge amount of history and items of cultural significance for you to explore. A good place to start is Kailua Village – a seaside town on the Kona Coast. Kailua used to be a quiet retreat for Hawaiian royalty but today it’s a busy tourist destination. Take a moment though to explore such points of interest as Hulihee Palace, the Mokuaikaua Church, and King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Resort where King Kamehameha I lived until his death in 1819. Once you’re done learning about the history and culture of Hawaii, head down to Kailua Pier and watch the sunset as the Hawaiian royalty used to do back in the day. Action Hawaiians have always been experts in the outrigger canoes that were traditionally used for fishing and transport. Today the canoes are mainly used for sport and recreation and they’re a fantastic way to keep fit as well as see some of the best that the island has to offer. Canoes and kayaks come in all shapes and sizes, from a six-person canoe that could take a whole family to a small surf kayak that is perfect for catching a few waves. Explore the Kona Coast or the Kohala Coast if you want some surf, or headed to the more protected waters of Hilo Bay. One of the best ways to make sure you get the most out of your big island action holiday is to take a kayak or canoe tour with a local guide who can take you along the coastline and share with you their knowledge, insight, and points of interest around the island. Come and join us on the big island. From active volcanoes, unique flora and fauna, stunning beaches, and some of the best surfing in the world – there really is something for everyone here on Hawaii.
