The Big Island's Best Beaches: Where to Go and What to Do

Aloha, beach enthusiasts! Hawaii’s Big Island is the largest in the archipelago and a haven for some of the world’s most picturesque beaches. Whether you’re staying at a Big Island Bed and Breakfast or just visiting for a day, the allure of Big Island beaches beckons travelers worldwide.

With endless miles of sandy shores, the Big Island presents many options. So, which beaches are worth your time? This guide will pinpoint the must-visit beaches based on various interests and activities.

1. Best for Surfing: Honoli’i Beach Park - Hilo Area

Nestled just north of Hilo, Honoli’i Beach Park is the Big Island’s premier spot for surfers. Its consistent waves and breathtaking coastal views make it a favorite among both locals and visitors. However, caution is advised if you’re a novice, as the currents can get strong. If you’re not into surfing, simply lazing on the beach and watching skilled surfers ride the waves can be as rewarding.

2. Best for Families: Hapuna Beach State Recreation Area - Kohala Area

Family outings call for safe waters, ample facilities, and enough room to spread out the beach blanket. Hapuna Beach checks all these boxes and then some. According to Conde Nast Traveler magazine, this beach is highly regarded by locals and tourists, consistently ranking as one of the best beaches in the United States. With its half-mile stretch of pristine golden sand and crystal-clear blue water, it’s easy to see why.

As one of the largest white sand beaches on the Big Island, it’s a favorite among families. Several covered pavilions are available for picnics and restrooms (although they may not be the most impressive). Occasionally, a lifeguard may be on duty despite the sign stating otherwise. Shade is limited on this beach, so be prepared for scorching hot sand on sunny days. The beach has a gradient, which gently gets deeper, providing a perfect environment for kids to paddle and play.

While the water remains relatively calm in summer, winter brings dangerous surf conditions that require careful monitoring before entering. Snorkelers will find an array of fish and coral at the south end of the beach.

3. Best for Turtles: Punalu’u Black Sand Beach - South Kau Area

The Big Island’s volcanic origins manifest in many unique ways, including its stunning black sand beaches. Punalu’u stands out among these. It’s not just the dark, shimmering sands that draw visitors but also the frequent sightings of green sea turtles basking in the sun. Don’t forget your camera – this beach is a visual treat. While getting up close with the turtles is tempting, remember to give them space and respect their natural habitat.

4. Best for Snorkeling: Kahalu’u Beach Park - Kona Area

When exploring the Big Island’s marine wonders, Kahalu’u Beach Park is a snorkeler’s dream come true. Located on the Kona side of the island, its calm waters house vibrant coral reefs and a plethora of tropical fish. Even if you’re a novice, this beach provides a relatively secure setting to familiarize yourself with snorkeling. Sea turtles, yellow tangs, and colorful parrotfish are just a few marine creatures you’ll encounter. Equipment rentals are available on-site, so the beach has got you covered even if you come unprepared.

5. Olive Colored Sand: Pu'u o Mahana (Green Sand Beach) - South Kau Area

Green sand beach, Hawaii. Mahana beach

Also known as Green Sand Beach or Pu’u o Mahana, Papakolea Beach truly deserves its name. The sand at this beach has a distinct olive-like color, which can be attributed to the presence of a greenish semi-precious stone called olivine. Over time, the powerful waves have eroded the base of the Pu’u o Mahana cinder cone and extracted olivines from the volcanic ash. These olivines are then deposited on the shore, giving the sand its unique green hue. While reaching this beach may pose some challenges, it earns its spot in our top beaches to visit on the Big Island solely due to its exceptional and unparalleled characteristics.

Maximizing Your Beach Experience: Tips & Tricks

Accommodation: Consider staying at a Big Island Bed and Breakfast. Not only do we offer a personal touch to your vacation, but we also often provide insider knowledge on lesser-known beach spots and local secrets.

Sun Safety: The Hawaiian sun can be deceptively strong. Always slather on a generous amount of sunscreen, wear a hat, and drink plenty of water.

Environmentally Friendly: Leave no trace. Make sure to pack up all your trash, and avoid using sunscreens that could harm the coral reefs. Look for “reef-safe” on the label. Sunscreen can be expensive in the resort areas, so plan on bringing a reef-safe sunscreen with you. You can find many SPF options at Sun Bum or on Amazon.

Stay Informed: Some beaches may have jellyfish or strong currents on certain days. Always check with local authorities or lifeguards about the day’s conditions before diving in.

Culture: Make sure to be respectful of Hawaii culture. The Hawaii tourism board has some great tips on how to be a responsible Hawaiian traveler.

The Big Island is a mosaic of diverse beaches. Whether you’re searching for an adrenaline rush, a serene snorkeling spot, unique landscapes, or family-friendly shores, there’s a beach for you.
