Volcano Winery
35 Pii Mauna Drive, Volcano, HI 96785
Wine might be in the name, but Volcano Winery has quietly become a destination for tea lovers, too. Located just outside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, this one-of-a-kind estate has expanded beyond the grape to grow its own high-elevation tea, something you won’t find at most vineyards. The winery began experimenting with tea in 2005, planting cuttings provided by the USDA and the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. By 2011, a full acre of Camellia sinensis had taken root in the mineral-rich volcanic soil, producing small-batch black and white teas with incredible depth. Their white tea went on to win top honors in a national tea competition, putting Volcano-grown tea on the map.
Want to taste it for yourself? Sign up for their Kīlauea Ki Tea Presentation, a 60-minute guided experience that takes you into the tea field for a tasting of the estate’s handcrafted teas, followed by a pour of their unique tea wine, Infusion.
Of course, wine lovers will still find plenty to sip, with scenic tastings and vineyard tours available daily.
