Junior Ranger Program at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Unleash Your Child’s Inner Explorer
Imagine a place where two of the world’s most active volcanoes coexist with lush rainforests and sweeping grasslands, all under the wide Hawaiian sky. Welcome to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, a magical realm where fire meets earth, and learning becomes an adventure. Nestled on the Big Island, this stunning park, located just a few miles from our Big Island bed and breakfast isn’t just about breathtaking landscapes – it’s the perfect playground for young minds to explore geology, ecology, and conservation through the Junior Ranger Program.
What is the Junior Ranger Program?
The Junior Ranger Program is a hands-on way for kids (and adults too!) to dive into the wonders of our national parks. From the majestic peaks of Yosemite to the steaming vents of Volcanoes National Park, participants get the chance to learn about the incredible diversity of America’s federal lands through engaging, self-guided activities. Whether through scavenger hunts, puzzles, or even a poetry contest (though good luck rhyming with “volcano”), this program offers an unforgettable way to experience the park.
Geared primarily for kids aged 7-12, but open to all ages, the program includes a workbook full of fun challenges. Younger children can enjoy coloring books designed just for them, while adults often find the activities add another layer of discovery to their visit.
Why Your Kids Will Love the Junior Ranger Program
Before even stepping foot in the park, the online activities build anticipation, making the trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park even more exciting. Once there, the activities in the Junior Ranger booklet transform your visit into an educational treasure hunt. Kids will be able to identify volcanic features, native plants, and wildlife they’ve only read about, bringing their imaginations to life.
As they explore, they’ll earn their very own Junior Ranger badge and take an oath to protect and preserve our national parks. This sense of ownership can spark a lifelong passion for conservation and inspire visits to other national parks across the country. Plus, watching the pride on their faces when they finally receive their badge is priceless.

How to Get Started
Getting involved is easy! You can kick off the adventure from home with online activities or pick up a Junior Ranger booklet when you arrive at the Kīlauea Visitor Center or the Kahuku Visitor Contact Station. Keep in mind, booklets and badges aren’t available by mail – they must be picked up on-site.
While many Junior Ranger programs across the country offer ranger-led activities, Volcanoes National Park’s program is currently self-guided. This gives families the flexibility to explore the park at their own pace, tailoring the experience to their interests.
Exciting Activities Await!
From virtual scavenger hunts to exploring lava tubes, the Junior Ranger Program at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers plenty of interactive fun. Online, kids can embark on a 360-degree journey through the park’s unique landscapes, answering questions as they explore. They can also design their own arrowhead or take part in a virtual Junior Ranger oath in American Sign Language.
Onsite, the real fun begins as they tackle challenges like a scavenger hunt at the Visitor Center and explore the park’s biodomes, learning about the volcanoes, local flora and fauna, and the rich history of the Big Island. Along the way, they’ll gain a deeper understanding of the forces that shaped these islands.
