Happy...Healthy...Hawaii!

Travel is one of the best ways to escape our every-day routines. And what better place to escape to than Hawaii! Breaking free of our stresses and responsibilities is a great rejuvenator…a much-needed reboot from the demands of our daily life. Thankfully, it’s fairly easy to get your happy on when you’re in Hawaii. From the moment you step off the plane, you’ll start to feel that island “hang loose” mentality that begins to put you at ease. From there, the sights, smells, and sounds of the tropics will have you checking out of your land-locked stresses and checking into the bliss of a relaxing getaway. It’s all there for the taking…if you choose to embrace it.

Island Eating

Fresh fruit including watermelon and strawberriesTo keep your digestive system in check, resist giving yourself vacation carte-blanche to eat whatever and whenever you want. Remember, you can still treat yourself without gorging yourself. Plus, there are plenty of healthy food options in Hawaii—including an abundance of tropical fruits, locally-grown vegetables, fresh seafood, and a variety of rice dishes. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to limit your choices. By all means, sample the rich meats of a plate lunch, the shave ice that’s everywhere, and the tropical drinks that epitomize the island experience. Just don’t overdo it! Small portions or shared meals are the ticket. If you opt to attend a luau, where large dinners—often buffet style—are part of the experience, great! Just feast responsibly. Instead of heaping on huge portions and then going back for seconds, be mindful of what you’re selecting and only take small, sample-sized amounts. That way, you get the full Hawaiian experience without the way-too-full after effects of a buffet blow out.

Island Outings

Group walking through rainforest in HawaiiEven though living like a local is one of the best ways to stay in Hawaii, you’re still a tourist…and you’ll want to see the island! Staying happy and healthy while sightseeing is almost built right in to the Hawaiian experience. So many of the activities are physical in nature—hiking, biking, swimming, surfing, kayaking, or even walking through historic sights and museums. Of course, a little R&R by the pool or at the beach is also important. Don’t push yourself too hard by scheduling too many activities all in one day. Pace yourself, go with the flow, and get your healthy on by blending together a balanced mix of both recreation and relaxation.
