Don’t worry if the parking lot is full, there is also parking available on Banyan Drive, a short walk away. Park your car and walk the 250-foot-long pedestrian bridge for a day of relaxation on Coconut Island.

The History of Moku Ola, Coconut Island, HI

Also known as Moku Ola, which translates to “healing island” or “island of life,” Coconut Island was once an island of refuge for warriors looking to escape harm while on the Big Island. It was once the site of an ancient healing temple where the warriors could seek shelter. Though the temple’s remains are no longer visible, the island’s history is still present in its Hawaiian name, Moku Ola. Nowadays, people travel to Coconut Island to find calm and healing away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Calm Waters and Sandy Beaches Await

Pack a swimsuit and enjoy the two beaches on Coconut Island, HI. The waters around the island are typically quite calm due to their proximity to Hilo Pier, making it a great spot to swim and float your cares away. Make your way to the northern tip of the island and you’ll find a stone tower with 10-foot and 20-foot high plateaus. This is a popular spot for both locals and visitors alike! Climb to the tower’s top and leap into the waters of Hilo Bay. Or sit back and enjoy watching people of all ages jumping, flipping, and diving from the top of the tower!

When you’re done swimming, enjoy a picnic on the soft grass and dry off in the sunshine, the island provides barbeque pits if you’re hoping to cook out! You can also reserve one of the pavilions on the island by contacting the county of Hilo Parks and Recreation. There are clean public restrooms and shower facilities for visitors if they choose to stay around and enjoy the stunning views of downtown Hilo and the coastline.

Walking Distance to Lili’uokalani Gardens

Coconut Island, HI is conveniently located just north of the stunning Lili’uokalani Gardens in Hilo. After a few hours of swimming and sun on the island, take a stroll across the bridge to Lili’uokalani, the largest authentic ornamental Japanese garden outside of Japan. Built as a tribute to the first Japanese immigrants who worked the sugar cane fields of Hawaii, this 24-acre garden boasts fishponds, rock gardens, a lovely teahouse, and great views of Coconut Island.
