Akatsuka Orchid Gardens
Less than 5 miles from our Volcano bed and breakfast, on Hwy 11 you will find the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. Originally established in 1974 by Mr. Moriyasu Akatsuka it offers many varieties of orchids both for viewing and purchasing. Mr. Akatsuka worked in a family orchid farm in Japan before coming to the Big Island and his experience in this area shows in the vast display of orchids at the gardens.
A photographers and artists paradise there are over 500 orchids on display including many of the mother plants and their offspring. The lighting in the greenhouse is perfect for photography or for painting. They invite artists to bring their pencils, paints or other medium and spend time drawing or painting some of the amazing orchids.
If you find something you cannot live without, they are Hawaii Agriculture Certified, meaning you can take your purchases with you on the plane or have them prepare and shipped to anywhere on the mainland or the Hawaiian islands.
On display at the gardens, from May – August, 2018 you can view the award winning orchid Volcano Queen. So perfect it was given a First Class Certificate for size and symmetry and is valued at $20,000. Originally found growing in its natural habitat in Thailand in 1984 this plant blooms once a year and stays in bloom for two months.
