Things to Do In Volcano, Hawaii

  1. Light the fire in your room and turn on the coffee pot filled with our complimentary locally grown Kona Coffee. Slip into one of our comfy robes, and take your time over breakfast in your room. Enjoy the freshly cut fruit and entree our staff have prepared for you and placed in your in-room refrigerator. No need to get formal to have breakfast, take your time and relax on your private deck or in your room.
  2. Once you have had breakfast, we suggest your first stop be Volcano Arts Centre (VAC) in Volcano Village. Now home to park rangers from Volcanoes National Park, who can answer any questions you have about the volcano activity, show you maps and photos, and explain how the lava from the Halema’uma’u Crater came to end up 25 miles away in the Leilani Estates.
  3. Take some time to walk around the arts center and view work from the local artists on display.
  4. Request info on the Niaulani Trail and then head out across the road. The Niaulani Trail is a 1/7th of a mile trail that will take you through a rich mixture of Hawaiian plants in a 4 acre native forest ecosystem. Niaulani provides a rich backdrop for VAC’s many arts and environmental education programs and if you are in the area on Monday you can join the Free Forest Tour that leaves from VAC at 9:30 am. For maps and downloadable guides visit the learning tools page. View the events page to find classes, music and events that are ongoing at VAC.
  5. After your walk, you are bound to be hungry, so head out to one of the local restaurants. Cafe Ono offers an outdoor garden setting with many fine arts in the art store. A vegetarian cafe with a selection of soups, salads, desserts, and locally grown coffee, and teas. The menu includes gluten-free and vegan items. Even if you don’t eat lunch here, it is a great place to stop by for a gourmet dessert and view more local artists work as well as purchase from a selection of local honey, jams and preserves. Open 11am- 3pm, Tues – Sun.
  6. After lunch head out and visit the Volcanoes Winery. Spend some time in the tasting room and discover a selection of wines unique to the Big Island. The winery uses tropical fruits like yellow guava and jaboticaba berry and blends them with traditional grapes. Remember to purchase a bottle or two for later.
  7. From the winery take Hwy 11 towards Hilo, stop at the Akatsuka Orchid Gardens. A gardeners, photographers, and artists paradise with over 500 orchids on display, including many of the mother plants and their offspring. Approved and inspected by the Department of Agriculture so any purchases can go home with you.
  8.  Leave Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and head back towards Volcano Village. On the right side between the 23 and 24 mile markers you will see a sign for 2400 FAHRENHEIT. Take the right turn and head down a country road to visit Michael and Misato Moratara, glass artists. Hours of operation are Thurs. through Mon. 10-4, Tues. and Wed. by appointment. Be mesmerized by these glass artists and they blow and work the glass into art, wine glasses, jewelry and more.
  9. After a busy day, head back to the lodge, put your wine on chill, select a movie from the office, if you have not already done so, and then head out to enjoy a romantic dinner at the Kailua Restaurant, or for something less formal; Thai Thai Bistro, or ʻŌhelo Café.
  10. Head back to the lodge, where the chilled wine and hot tub awaits. Turn on the jets and relax into the warm water, watch the sun go down, look at the stars and listen to the frogs and unwind.
  11. After the hot tub, head back to your room, light the fire, crack open the wine, put in the movie and the evening is yours. We cannot think of a nicer or more romantic way to spend the day.
